More about excessive hair
What is excessive hair growth?
With excessive hair you suffer from excessive or unwanted hair growth. Nowadays, many people want to get rid of their body hair, which grows excessively in some. Excessive hair is often cosmetic, but sometimes also medically disturbing. Think of ingrown hairs, itching, bumps, and skin irritations.
Hirsutism and Hypertrichosis are the two forms of excessive hair growth. They often occur separately from each other, but a combination of Hirsutism and Hypertrichosis can also occur. The form of excess hair that occurs in both men and women is Hypertrichosis. This concerns hair growth in places where normally no or thin hairs occur or an extension of the area where hair growth is normally present.
What is Hirsutism?
Hirsutism is a form of excessive hair growth in women in which hair growth has increased according to the male hair pattern, such as: hair growth in the face, limbs, pubic area and chest region. There are different forms of Hirsutism, in which different factors play a role.
- Familial Hirsutism: The level of male hormones is not elevated, but there is a genetic cause. However, we often see that the amount of male hormones in the hair follicle is increased. This form of excessive hair often starts during puberty.
- Hormonal Hirsutism: The level of male hormones is increased, there is an overproduction that is produced in the adrenal cortex and ovaries. This form of Hirsutism is accompanied by PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) and other symptoms such as: acne, menstrual disorders and other symptoms of masculinization. If you suspect PCOS, you can ask for a referral to the Gynaecologist.
- Hirsutism caused by certain medications. Think of anabolic use or testosterone-related drugs.

Skin scan and intake
During the first consultation, the nature of your complaint will be discussed with the practitioner, so that a tailor-made treatment plan can be made. A good treatment plan starts with a skin analysis with the Observ520 skin scanner. The skin therapist can provide a detailed skin analysis about the deeper layers of the skin. You will also receive advice on products that you use at home to support and optimize the treatment. The results of the scan are stored and compared so that we can monitor the progress of the treatment.
